Falvey helps promote One Book Villanova University program
By Bernadette Dierkes
Falvey Memorial Library is lending its talents to the new One Book Villanova program, launched September 28. Joe Lucia, University librarian and director, assisted the One Book committee with its inaugural selection, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The One Book logo, seen on banners, blogs, bookmarks, web sites and related collateral materials, was created by Donna Blaszkowski of Media Technologies and Creative Design.
Bill Greene from Periodicals was selected as one of the University-wide book group facilitators, hosting sessions on campus and in the surrounding community.
Merrill Stein, assessment librarian, spearheaded research with Falvey librarians Taras Ortynsky and Darren Poley, with assistance from Dennis Lambert, to develop the display and accompanying web page highlighting Afghani culture and geography featured in The Kite Runner.
Using her talents in information design, graphic designer Lorraine Gallagher-Williams and her student assistants in the Creative Design department conceptualized the research to create the colorful and informative visual exhibit on Falvey’s main floor. The exhibit will be expanded and updated throughout the academic year.
Additionally, Darren Poley serves as coordinator to the Lower Merion Library System in hosting The American Place Theatre's Literature to Life presentation of The Kite Runner on campus Sunday, Dec. 4.
One Book Villanova continues through spring 2006 with campus-wide events surrounding The Kite Runner, including a visit by author Khaled Hosseini on Tuesday evening, February 7 in the Jake Nevin Field House.
